October 2011
We are proud to announce that we have launched a Training Contract competition providing GCSE pupils in the region, disillusioned at the thought of high university fees and crippling debts, with the chance to fast-track their way into accountancy.
Year 12 pupils at schools including Beauchamp College and Leicester Grammar School have been offered the opportunity to enter the competition, which on completion will provide one lucky student with a training contract at the firm at the end of their A Levels. Here they will start their studies for the Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT) qualification.
Representatives from the firm recently gave presentations about the competition. Interested pupils will now submit a two page application letter, rather than a CV, explaining why they are applying and why they think they might be suited to a career in accountancy. Shortlisted pupils will then all enjoy a week of work experience at the firm next Easter before the winner is announced prior to the start of their final Year 13 studies and university selection process.
Chris Castleman, Managing Partner, comments, “With ever increasing tuition fees and high levels of debt it’s no surprise that many young people are being put off university. Each year we already receive hundreds of applications from school leavers and university graduates for our annual trainee positions. Where this training contract competition differs is that it offers students currently in Year 12 the chance to apply for a guaranteed place at the firm on completion of their A Level studies and a fast-track into the accountancy profession. The successful applicant will also know of their acceptance before their final year, relieving them of the often stressful university selection process.”
Chris added, “Early reaction to the competition has been extremely positive and we have already started to receive applications from students hoping to get this unique opportunity.”
Dipesh Joshi, who took the decision to join Newby Castleman rather than going to university, assisted with the presentations. He successfully completed his Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT) qualification and is now embarking on his Institute of Chartered Accountants (ACA) exams.
“Going on to higher education was a consideration,“ he said, “but when the chance to be a trainee at Newby Castleman arose it seemed a perfect opportunity. Not going to uni has meant I won’t have any student debt but I will have practical expertise and vital qualifications in this competitive industry. My experience has shown that there are opportunities out there for young people who decide against university, but they need to be prepared to work hard and be learning all the time.”
