June 2011
Employees from Newby Castleman have taken to the road on two wheels in their numbers and put in some real pedal power as part of the recent 2011 Leicestershire Cycle Challenge.
Workplaces across Leicester and Leicestershire took part in the free, fun event which was set up by Leicester City Council in partnership with CTC, the UK’s national cyclists’ organisation, to encourage people working or living in the county to remember the joys and benefits of riding a bike.
Although not retaining our crown as winners of the 50-199 employee category, staff from both our Leicester head office and Loughborough branch together cycled 946.5 miles in three weeks – twice our initial target of 500 miles. This in turn meant burning 29,336 calories and saving 129kg of CO2.
Ten employees including Loughborough Partner, Annalise Lovett, were also rewarded with free cinema tickets for getting back on their bike after an absence of over a year or more. She comments, “I used to cycle regularly but sadly hadn’t been on my bike for several years. The challenge encouraged me to dust my bike down and go out for a couple of rides in the country with my family and we all had a great time and really enjoyed it. It demonstrates that this challenge is very effective in reminding people that bike riding is a fun and rewarding experience.”
