Hugglescote Working Men’s Club

Hugglescote Working Men’s Club

A former working men’s club near Coalville was able to enjoy a new lease of life as a community facility following our business advice.

Hugglescote Working Men’s Club, which has been open since the 1920s, changed its name and status to a social club, thus allowing it to save money whilst opening its doors to the wider community – a move which breathed new life into the Dennis Street club.

Bob Watson from Hugglescote Social Club, comments, “Since the club’s heyday several decades ago we’d gradually experienced a big decline in membership and found that we were having to pay expensive affiliation fees to the Working Men’s Club and Institute without getting many new members through the door to pay for them.

We’d heard another working men’s club had made a successful transition to a social club so with Newby Castleman’s guidance we were able to make this move ourselves at the start of the year. Without now being restricted by the many rules and regulations of working men’s clubs we’ve been able to open the facility to everyone in the community which has really benefitted us. Our membership has increased by 5% in the first six months alone and we’ve been able to host more events, bringing more money into the club.”

He adds, “With a development of new build homes nearing completion in the village we were also keen to make this change in advance to try and attract as many new people to the club as possible when they move here.”

David Hastings, Partner at our Loughborough office who advised the club, comments, “To have remained as a working men’s club would have cost this organisation valuable funds. However changing its status to a social club has been the catalyst for a new lease of life. Not only has this removed lots of business ‘red tape’ and the old fashioned stigma that a working men’s club possesses, but as a result they’ve saved hundreds of pounds in fees and managed to turn a £5,000 deficit into a £10,000 surplus.

Run by an enthusiastic and hard working committee, it’s a great community facility and one that the whole of Hugglescote can be proud of.”
