The Grainstore Brewery

The Grainstore Brewery

The largest brewery in the country’s smallest county rose above a decline in beer sales to see significant growth over 12 months, resulting in new investments and protection for local jobs.

The Grainstore Brewery in Oakham, Rutland, who have been our clients for over 18 years, reversed the trend in an industry that had seen hard times with beer sales falling for the eighth year in a row and many independent pubs closing to trade. However, thanks to prestigious supply deals they secured with supermarket chains Tesco and Co-operative, as well as pub chain J.D.Whetherspoons, their award-winning beer was able to continue to support an industry going through tough times.

Beer sales support around a million jobs and generate almost £8 billion in tax revenue according to the British Beer and Pub Association (BBPA) and with the Grainstore continuing to supply to big names, they were able to contribute towards the protection of local jobs and local business.

As a result of our expert advice, The Grainstore Brewery was able to adapt to shifts in consumer trends that saw many beer drinkers visit the supermarket rather than the pub for their favoured pint. We advised them in investing in capital projects such as new delivery vehicles, as well as helping with key business decisions on tax efficiency to ensure the brewery continues to prosper.

Master Brewer, Tony Davis comments, “Whilst we are experts at producing award-winning beers, the tax and accounting side of the business can be a minefield and so, when I opened the brewery all those years ago I sought expert advice from Newby Castleman.

Having dealt with them previously, I knew I could rely on them and 18 years later, we would only trust Newby Castleman, especially as they have advised us on key business decisions, and helped us to grow and plan for the future. They have really made a significant contribution to our ongoing success.

I believe accountants have a major responsibility in the economic recovery, advising businesses on growth and strategy. Newby Castleman’s services have resulted in us saving money, helping us to thrive and, most importantly, continuing to produce award-winning beers.”

The Grainstore Brewery is looked after by John Griffin, Partner at our Leicester office, who adds, “With the beer industry continuing to struggle against the closure of many pubs, as well as the continual tax on beer increasing by 2% above inflation every year , The Grainstore Brewery have succeeded despite difficult times.

Now it is more important than ever to support local business and we need to help them and ensure that Tony and his team can concentrate on running the brewery, while we overcome the financial hurdles.”

Established in 1995, The Grainstore Brewery is recognised by the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) and the Society of Independent Brewers, (SIBA) for producing a award-winning ales.
