I graduated from Nottingham University in 2004 after studying Maths and Physics. I was excited to receive an offer from Newby Castleman for a number of reasons - they are a medium size firm offering a wide range of experience, from tax, audit, accounts preparation, company valuations and other specialist areas. I also wanted to work in Africa before starting my training, and the Partners were flexible and allowed me to defer my start for a year.
I’ve now been with the firm for 4 years, and with some hard study and the thorough training that has been provided I qualified as a chartered accountant in 2008. Despite failing my case study (surely the worst exam ever created!) the Partners allowed me to retake it and I passed at the second attempt.
I am often out of the office auditing medium size groups of companies, or assisting smaller clients in producing statutory accounts. The rest of the time I’m in the office, sometimes working on specialist corporation tax matters, preparing tax computations, and helping clients to meet the legal requirements of operating a limited company.
The tax and accounting laws are constantly changing so getting a chance to go on update courses at local venues, such as the Walkers Stadium helps me keep up to date.
The good atmosphere amongst the staff results in there being loads of social events to get involved with, from the firm wide car treasure hunt or go-karting evenings to football competitions and the odd visit to the pub at the end of the week.
