Hi, my name is Jude and I am a trainee at Newby Castleman. I studied at Loughborough University where I gained a degree in Economics and Accountancy. I’m currently in my 3rd year of an ACA training contract. I am part Qualified and only have my finals left to sit.
Newby Castleman has been a good place to undertake the ACA qualification, with variety of work from audits to account preparations, including relevant tax computations, and some management accounts. The firm’s client base is spread across the country so we do have the opportunity to travel from time to time. For me that’s meant a 60/40 split between working in the office to being out at client’s premises.
It can get quite hard during exam time to balance work and studying; but the relief/success of passing makes all the hard work worthwhile. We train at Kaplan in Nottingham for a couple of weeks at a time. While there we mix with trainees from other firms, a few of which are now good friends.
The trainees at Newby Castleman are quite a sociable group, some of us meet up for lunch most days as well as playing badminton once a week. The local ICAEW student society also puts on a variety of events from the annual ball in February to a skittles night we had last month. Recently I joined a few of my colleagues to take part in the Leicester marathon corporate relay, which was a good laugh as well as helping to keep us in shape and raise money for local charities.
