Sammie Cowperthwaite

Sammie FavellI started at Newby Castleman straight after completing my A-levels.  I approached the firm about my career path in accountancy and they advised on the options available to me.

Having reviewed my options, I decided to study for the Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT) exams. This, in hindsight, I believe was the best path for me. My study gave me a wide range of knowledge in accountancy and was a good base for any further studies.

Within two years I had completed my AAT exams, after which the firm gave me the opportunity to study for the Chartered Accountant qualification. I am now  part way through my Chartered exams, and Newby Castleman have been supportive throughout.

I have been working here for three years now, and in that time have gained a lot of experience in audit and accounts preparation. In addition, I have also been given a wide variety of work from preparing VAT returns to helping with Pension Scheme accounts.

My responsibilities have increased as I have progressed with my studies and this has increased my confidence when liaising with clients. I’m now auditing senior on some external jobs for the first time. The firm has a wide breadth of clients; this has meant that I have gained experience in a variety of business types, from small sole traders and partnerships to assisting with larger group accounts.

The social side of Newby Castleman is very enjoyable and I have gained many good friends whilst working here. The firm has many social events, either arranged for everyone by the firm such as go-karting, or smaller nights out arranged by groups of staff such as bowling. This is in addition to the events organised by LENCASS for students; these are always very popular and an excellent way to meet up with students from other firms.
